Indian Kite Flyers Took Part at Weifang International Kite Festival 2014

The 31th Weifang International Kite Festival and the 10th International Kite Championship opened in the city of Weifang, east China's Shandong Province, on Saturday.

Nine kite-flyers from the city-based One India Kite team will represent India in the world kite-flying contest organised by the International Kite Federation at Weifang city in China from April 19 to 26.

The kite-flyers’ team, which will be led by Syam Padman, will have Abdulla Aliyekkal, Sajid Thoppil, Sundara Murthy, Hashim Kadakalakam, Anoop K. Francis, Mohammed Ali, Revinderpal Singh and Sandesh Kaddi as members.

65 countries

P.V. Abdullakoya, president of Kite Flyers Association of India, said in a communication here on Saturday that delegates from 65 countries would attend the international event.

“Three giant kites, made in the form of cat, duck and bear, would compete for the prize this time,” Mr. Abdullakoya said.

Kite exhibition

Ahead of the world programme, the Kite Flyers’ Association, with the support of the Kozhikode Rotary Club and the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will organise a special kite exhibition and live demonstration to showcase the splendour of the pastime for the public on Kozhikode beach from Sunday.

Training for newcomers

The three-day programme will also offer training support to newcomers in the field.

Pune International Kite Festival 2014

Pune: This Republic Day, get set to enjoy the Sakal International Kite Festival. The event to be held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Stadium, Balewadi on January 26 will see more than 20 professional, international kite fliers, rubbing shoulders with 43 Indian kite fliers. Kite fliers from New Zealand, Kuwait, France, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, along with the Indian counterparts are set to provide a visual treat to Puneites.

In addition to the kite festival, the Sakal Young Republic of India (YRI) carnival is being organised for children. Tattoo making, face painting, photo booth, ring game, ping pong, bull ride along with the jumping doll, sumo suit and more are sure to keep children engrossed.

There will also be performances by jugglers and men on stilts at the carnival. Tickets to the kite festival will allow entry for the children’s fun carnival. A specially designed food arena will be set up to offer sumptuous delicacies for all visitors.

The event is being showcased in two sessions. The first session will be held from 9 am to 1 pm, while the second will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm. Entry fee per person for both sessions is a mere Rs 100. One can book tickets for any convenient session.

However, with limited seats available, it is important to reserve the tickets in advance. It is also important to read and observe the safety instructions printed on the ticket prior to attending the festival.

Belgaum International Kite Festival 2014 will be on 18^th and  19 ^th of January, 2014 at Belgaum, in the state of Karnataka, INDIA  and will commence on 18^th  of January, 2014 at  9 a.m. and conclude on  19^th of  January  with a ceremonial  valedictory function.

Kite World Records 2013 - Limca Book of Records 2013

Rotary Club of Solapur East, Maharashtra conducted a kite-making workshop for 1,017 students during the Rotary International Kite Festival 2012 at Shivaji Adhyapak Vidyala on Jan 21, 2012. set World Records India and Limca Book of Records, kite workshop was handled by Ashok Shah and Pavankumar Solanki ( Founder of Royal Kite Flyers Club ) . Students painted the kites, stuck tails and tied thread of manja. Through this event, citizens of Solapur who have a strong community spirit and bonding passed on two most relevant messages – Save the Girl Child and End Polio Now.

Kites in India
India has a very ancient kite tradition. Most people believe that kites were first brought into India by
the Chinese travellers, Fa Hien and Hiuen Tsang but from there the kites have taken their own
evolutionary route in India and today Indian kites are almost exclusively fighter kites. They are made of tissue paper and bamboo and almost all Indian kites have a very similar shape –
a diamond shaped piece of tissue with a central spine and a single bow. The differences lie in the many patterns and colours used to make the paper sail. But the Indian kite is a superb flying machine, capable of responding to the flyers’ lightest touch, extremely maneuverable and perfectly suited to
its function. The generic name for a kite in India is

Patang
.
Types of Indian kites

While the basic shape of the Indian kite remains largely unchanged from the diamond, there are subtle variations – and each has its fervent supporters.

Patang
– This is the most common Indian kite. The height/width ratio is generally 1:1.2. As in all
Indian kites, the edges are reinforced by a thin thread along the circumference of the kite and the
overlapping paper is glued back on to the sail. This is a tail-less kite. The tail is generally a small
double triangular piece of tissue, pasted such that the bottom edge is flush with the level of the sail,
with thin bamboo slivers along the outer edges for reinforcement.

Guddi
– Almost as popular as the patang, this variation generally has a height/width ratio in reverse –
1.2 : 1. In other words, the kite is taller than it is wide. The tail in this kite is generally a small tassel
of tissue paper.

Dedh Kanni
– This is a little more uncommon and is generally used in lower winds – The kite is significantly broader than the regular patang and the height/width ratio tends to be close to 1:1.5. It shares the triangular patch tail with its parent patang.

Tukkal
– This shape is more akin to the Malaysia Wau than the patang and is almost never seen in Indian skies except at Kite Festivals. In Pakistan, though, it is still a popular design.

Twin double-bows make this a very “heavy” kite and not many people possess the skill to fly it. Besides, the time and energy required to make one make it a precious object, one you
wouldn’t like to lose by risking it in a kite battle
