Flying an object in the territory of clouds, controlling it with a
string held on earth, and floating its movements in the wind has
stimulated men's imagination in ages. In the ancient times, this had
gratified men's subconscious wish to fly in sky like.No one knows when men started flying kites. Greek literature mentioned about kite flying way back in 14th century BC. Later, kites moved out of Greece and traveled to India, China, Mongolia, Europe, Thailand and Japan.
According to history, the kings and Nawabs of India employed trained fliers to fly kites for them. They developed it into a rich tradition that was both entertaining and served as a way of demonstrating their prowess. Slowly but steadily, kite flying became popular among the country's people, and now kite manufacturing is a serious trade which attracts those with a business bent of mind. Today, kite flying is a tremendously popular sport both in India and abroad. One would be amazed to see its global presence.
American Kite Fliers Association is the largest association of Kite fliers in the world with over 4,000 members in 35 countries. Toronto Kite Fliers is another association, involved with a range of kite activities and works closely with regional kite clubs as well as clubs in British Columbia, Quebec and the Northern United States. The Niagara Wind Riders Kite Fliers' Association founded in 1992, on the other hand dedicates to the enjoyment and promotion of kite flying as an artistic, scientific and sporting activity for people of all ages.
Kite Festival: The very term festival brings to mind varying temperaments and sentiments. Holding austerity and a rigid regimen these bring colorful vibrancy and vivid images of gleeful participation and merriment. The kite festival is one such festival, where kids take part with as much enthusiasm as the elders.

Festival Delight in India: The International kite festival was born in 1989 in Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat. Ever since, this city hosts the festival every year. It is known as Uttarayan in this state, when Kite-flying enthusiasts gather from around the world. Participants from all over the world take part in competitions to display kites and their flying skills.
The inaugural of the first international kite festival was held on January 13, in a specially created PatangNagar. It was a 3 day festival and the city teemed with bazaars displaying thousands of kites and reels of endless varieties. Craftsmen demonstrated kite making skills and taught how to prepare the special thread used for flying kites. Paper kites with shapes such as eagles and snakes ascended towards the skies.
In the year 2010, more than 163 kite-flying enthusiasts from 36 countries competed in the five-day long festival. Kerala, too held its first ever Kite Festival in 2010. The Government of Goa, planned for the kite festival in 2003 to help promote tourism It marked the spirited joyous days with sumptuous dishes from Gujarati cuisine. The famous dance Garba is also performed. The musicians and dancers swing in glory keeping the spirit of the festival intact. Although the name, rituals and norms differ, celebrations take place in many ways lending more color to the already diverse Indian states.
Besides offering a magnificent spectacle, the kite festival is noteworthy to help promote friendships and tourism to teamwork among locals. Kite making promotes the cottage industry that provides reasonable income and builds goodwill and camaraderie among people of the country.
